As one of the world’s largest phone manufacturers, Sony Ericsson may take a more twisted road to smartphone ubiquity. It throws its weight behind Symbian and then began its journey back in the pre-joint venture Ericsson. Symbian would finally become the world’s most popular as a smartphone platform. Its fatal error is putting all its support to the doomed UIQ flavor but share out even a fraction of the support to its cousin S60. The untimely collapse of UIQ caused the company nearly rudderless and ill-equipped, and it became ill-equipped to cope with its competitors such as Nokia, HTC and Apple.
