For me, acquiring a degree meant being able to better my future, but there were too many obstacles in life. I was the oldest in the family with Mom and four younger siblings at home. Mom worked too, but the money was not enough. The financial situation at home was bad and I was working two jobs to get in some money. My dreams of getting a degree were forgotten.

To my good luck I met a friend who had moved out of our middle-class neighborhood and was now doing very well for himself. He mentioned that he had got himself a degree through a distance learning degrees program. He was now working as a medical assistant in a reputed hospital.

To cut a long story short, I enrolled in a long distance learning program for teachers’ degree. I signed up for a degree program as a special educator. The program was accredited and that gave me the advantage of having a degree that is recognized by the state. The degree program was convenient as it was very flexible and made to suit my needs. I could log on online and attend my classes. The online forum allowed me to interact with other students and my teachers. It offered me an easy way to clear all my doubts and queries. The long distance program also conducted classroom programs on regular basis; which made learning easier. In addition I got an opportunity to intern at an institute of my choice. It was an excellent chance as I got hands on experience of what it would take to be a special educator.

Today when I look back I realize joining the distance learning program changed my life. I got myself a degree and a chance to grow in life. I have been a special educator for over five years and enjoy my job. Having realized my dreams I would advise anyone who wants a degree to join a distance learning program.
